Expansion of the Grand Mosque [Masjid Al Haram] in Makkah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

The Grand Mosque is the largest Mosque in the world and surrounds Islam's holiest place, the Kaaba, in the city of Makkah, Saudi Arabia. Muslims face in the Qibla (direction of the Kaaba) while performing Salah (obligatory daily prayers). One of the Five Pillars of Islam requires every Muslim to perform the Hajj pilgrimage, one of the largest annual gatherings of people in the world, at least once in his or her lifetime if able to do so. The Expansion Project (and its elements) at the time of our appointment consisted of a workforce of approximately 52,000 in addition to contractors and sub-contractors.

Majid and Sheeraz were appointed as Senior Risk Management Consultants to advise high level stakeholders on the project. The project being unique in many ways also possessed hazards and risks of a unique nature. The construction works were undertaken with millions of pilgrims visiting the site on a weekly basis during busy times across the multi-site operations.

Our work on the project involved auditing project related operational risks, assess the management of safety, attend stakeholder briefs, plan & lead the implementation of intervention plans in addition to guide and coach project Safety Management Teams.

In addition to our work in the Middle East, Waris Consulting provide safety services to organisations belonging to the construction industry in the United Kingdom.
